Well, I fully intend to keep this one short as a kind of
apology for all the previous ones... ok, I left Argentina from
Salta after a nightmare trying to get to Chile...all the roads were
blocked from the snow on the passes and in the end I gave up
waiting. So me and two kiwis and an english dude jumped on the
10pm bus to La Quiaca the argentine border town cleverly scheduled
to arrive 2 hours before the border opened. At an altitude of
3.5000 metres you can imagine the cold...or maybe you cant, let me
fill you in....it was soooooooo f*cking cold, I cant remember ever
being so frozen! Well, being there at that border waiting in the
little waiting room with all the bolivians sitting around drinking
syrupy cafe poured from a thermal by one of the bolivian ladies in
their traditional knee length colourful pleated skirt layered over
bundles and bundles of clothes, thigh high stockings slipped into
open toed sandles waist length plaited hair topped off with an oddly
fitting bowler hat. Most of these ladies carried some kind of bundle
on their backs swathed in a brightly coloured blanket, some of them
turned out to be babies, others msyteriously hid the contents.
Finally we braved the sub zero temperatures and over tired and a
little giddy we giggled all the way to the border. Once
through the slack control we realised immediately that it was sunday
and thus no banks were open...ATM`s are unheard of in places like
this, only the bigger cities like La Paz will have such technology
and so we changed up the remainder of our argentine pesos
(practically nothing) and went on our way. We were aiming to
head for Uyuni but the next bus was to Tapiza where we would have to
change...only we discovered on arrival that no there werent buses
going from Tupiza to uyuni on sunday...dilemma! Luckily the
english guy (who we had only met on the bus) was wadded and agreed
to lend us cash until we could get to somewhere to obtain something.
So finally this morning we found a tour company that
would give us cash advances and onve again I`m in the
money! loads to say about this town and indeed Bolivia itself
but I need the loo, being at altitude seems to make me go every 3
minutes! mannnnnnnn ok chicoa, I`m off on a tour tomorrow with
these guys and two kiwis I met in salta who are cycling around aouth
america(!) for four days, I`ll let you know how it goes. tons of
love to you ALL Emma
