Well, it had to happen sooner or later, yes I’ve become
a mum, overnight and without pain! Before you fall off your
chairs let me just explain…Pedro and I went out to the countryside
this weekend, both of us successfully trying to escape from having
to play football (him) and basketball (me) hiking being the
preferred form of exercise for both of us. Anyway, we took a
bus out to Miraflores where there are loads of thermal springs and
hotpools both natural and in the form of swimming pools, and began
walking to Mondragon, another village a good half a days walk
away. After a few hours we stopped under a tree to eat and
refresh and ate mandarins accompanied by the sound of goats and the
wind in our hair. Glancing round to the valley behind us I
noticed a disused old pool further down the side of the mountain,
full of mud and feeling all Indiana Jones like I decided to explore
a little leaving Pedro at the top probably sick of my little
(mis)adventures, however as I drew nearer I heard the bleat of a
goat a little louder than before and suddenly realised there was a
little bundle of fluff submerged in the mud. I reached down to
get it out shouting for Pedro at the same time who came racing to
help. This bundle was close to death mouth full of a mineral
saturated claggy mud. We ran with the glob down to the river
which was even worse with its chemicals and minerals flowing like
poison from the mines of Cerro Rico and washed him off as best we
could. There didn’t seem to be anyone around and walking back
we couldn’t find the other goats we had passed on the way. It
seemed like a race against time as his head was lolling and his
breathing really laboured, so wrapped up in my jacket…which
incidentally is now mierda…I carried him back to Miraflores where we
boarded the bus back to Potosí. The people on the bus were
great giving us their precious water to help try to revive the poor
animal and finally we arrived and headed straight to Pedro’s house
where we placed the kid in a big bowl under the shower. After
a few minutes he was like new although still shaking and crying
which was better than before. We found a babies bottle and have
been feeding him water and milk and since then he is like new and I
am the proud mother of this beautiful little animal who we named
Monstrito, little monster because of the way he looked when we
pulled him out and also because he has turned out to be quite a
cheeky little thing! Ok that’s all for now folks! Chao chao
Mama Emma
